NURSES WEEK
National disaster expert
to speak
on May 8
As the leader of a new agency created to address the role of health care in disasters, Dr. James J. James could be considered the face of catastrophic medicine in America.
He’s recognized as an expert throughout the United States as well as abroad.
And he’s coming here.
Area nurses and physicians are invited to hear James speak about pandemic flu during a dinner lecture at the Eastern Shore Yacht & Country Club in Melfa on May 8. The event is sponsored by District 11 of the Virginia Nurses Association and Shore Memorial Hospital to celebrate National Nurses Week and Hospital Week.
James’ disaster credentials were well established by the time he became the first director of the American Medical Association’s Center for Public Health Preparedness and Disaster Response. That agency was created in 2002 to elevate the status of catastrophic medicine as it relates to bioterrorism, weapons of mass destruction and natural disasters.
Before that, from 1999 to 2002, James was director of the Miami-Dade County Health Department. His work included responding to the anthrax attacks of 2001.
He ended up being appointed to the Governor’s Domestic Security Task Force and was also named Lead Health Agent for Preparedness and Response for Florida’s Region 7, an area covering one-third of the state’s population.
James earned his medical degree at the University of Cincinnati. He holds a doctorate in public health from UCLA and a master’s in health care administration from Baylor University.
He retired as a brigadier general after 26 years with the U.S. Army Medical Department.
James currently also serves as editor in chief of the AMA’s Disaster Medicine and Public Health Preparedness publication.
The dinner lecture on May 8 will begin with a cash bar at 5:30 p.m., followed by the talk at 6. Dinner will be served at 7.
The cost is $25.
